Concepts of Dualism and Unity in Contemporary Art and Design
Fortezza da Basso, V.Le Filippo Strozzi,

Giovanni Cordoni, writer and organiser for the event, has described the theme of this, the 15th edition of the Florence Biennale as dedicated to the ‘primordial, eternal union between light and darkness’ which aims to underline ‘the ability of art, as well as architecture and design, to give emotional awareness of the infinity and irresistible power of nature, a dimension in which opposites intertwine spontaneously.’
He expects that the theme ‘leads to a reflection on the need to understand what seems opposite to us and which is instead part of a unitary system: our human race, our planet, our universe. A unitary system that requires our utmost care and at the basis of which there can only be mutual recognition and respect, dialogue and peace, which have always constituted the fundamental principles of the Florence Biennale.’
Emily’s long enduring preoccupation with our troubled relationship with the planet fits well with the theme. Her approach allows the viewer to comprehend a commonality across deep time, geology and cultures. Through the combination of traditional carving skills allied with technology where necessary, she produces timeless works which marry the contemporary with the ancient, manifesting a unique, poetic presence. They are, each one, a call to profound thoughtfulness, looking to the future.
